Children’s Books for November & Thanksgiving
This list includes books that my family enjoys to read leading up to Thanksgiving. All of these are great for around preschool through first grade, and several of these are also wonderful for younger toddlers. I recommend previewing books before reading them to your child. I do this to make sure they’re appropriate for my child’s stage, in line with our family’s values, and it also gives me a chance to think about how to present the book and tell the story.
Why read Thanksgiving themed books with your child?
It’s exciting for my daughter when her favorite seasonal books come out of storage or when we pick up a stack of seasonal books from the library. Seasonal books help us to celebrate the natural rhythms of the seasons in our home. For the month of November and the upcoming holiday of Thanksgiving, we are focusing our reading list around themes of gratitude, community, generosity, and contentment, as well as reading a selection of books written by Native American authors.
Guidance on teaching kids about the Thanksgiving holiday
I found helpful guidance for teaching children about Thanksgiving in a culturally sensitive way at the links below. The Bioneers curriculum also has wonderful resources that accompany the Keepunumuk book (on the reading list below), such as craft activities and discussion questions.

What about storage of seasonal books?
I keep seasonal books in a bookcase in my bedroom where they stay tucked away all year until they are needed again. Another option would be storing seasonal books with seasonal decor. I only own a handful of seasonal books because storage is at a premium in my family’s small apartment, so I get many books from the library. Utilizing our local library is also a real cost saver for us. When it comes to seasonal library books, I recommend planning ahead and placing a hold on the books you want two weeks ahead of time (or longer for the most popular titles).
