Halloween Spell Jar Craft

This is a simple and fun craft for Halloween. My preschooler and I had so much fun making these! It’s also a great activity for kids to practice fine motor skills by placing all the small objects into the small opening of the bottles. After assembling the jars, we used them as a Halloween decoration on our seasonal table. For supplies you can use any small jars with tops, and any small objects that fit into the jars. Below is a list of the supplies that we used and some additional ideas.

Supplies

Supplies we used:

  • Small bottles or jars (view on Amazon)

  • Mini seashells (view on Amazon)

  • Sand in a variety of colors (view on Amazon)

  • A variety of mosses (view on Amazon)

  • A broken up sea sponge

  • Beads (Any type of beads that fit into your jars will work. If you have a younger child, then larger beads will probably be easier for your child to pick up and place into the jars)

  • Sunflower seeds

Other ideas for ingredients to fill the jars:

  • Chunky biodegradable glitter (like Hemway eco friendly glitter)

  • Crystal chips

  • Small pebbles

  • Mini feathers

  • Rice

  • Lentils or beans

Assembling the jars

After I laid out all of the materials, we simply added the items to the jars. You can go a step further and say that different colors of sand mean different things (ex. I’m adding blue sand and seashells for calm. I’m adding pink sand for love. I’m adding yellow sand to shine bright.) My daughter really enjoys when we say that different colors or objects add different things to the “spell”.

How messy is this activity?

Not too messy. How much of the sand and materials get spilled will depend. We did this one day and it was not too messy, and another day it got a little out of control with sand and beads going everywhere. If you’re worried about the mess but want to do this activity, then choose items that are a little larger (like larger beads and small pebbles) and leave out the sand.
